Digital Typewriter

Unsure what uses this would have, but it has been a fun one to play with. Use this frontend to type things out and see your favorite fonts!

Lately I have been messing around with some of the code generation tools and I wanted a way to try some things out on projects that were relatively safe. So, I decided that a typewriter code project was the ticket. I have always wanted to load up a roll of paper so that I could free-type and not worry about the end of the paper; guessing the end of the bottom margin has not always been my strong suit. So, I figured that it might be amusing to make a frontend that allows you to just type infinitely.

I won't bury the lede - if you are interested, do check it out here:  https://typeri.us/digityper/

The entire project was built in html and javascript, so you are able to see the entire frontend. Text which is written to the page can be downloaded from the "Publish" button on the left. In fact, I wrote this blog post on it! On the right side you have an option to select custom typefaces, all thanks to them being hosted by Richard Polt on his site here

The keyboard can either be actuated by using your mouse or a touchscreen, or by using the keys on your computer. Do be warned that it doesn't work quite so well on a small screen! Presently the sound effects are a bit on the "meh" side, but perhaps I'll get around to recording some for it. Hearing the bell ring does really add a little something!  It even has bunny ears, though they aren't animated yet.

This frontend saves nothing, so be mindful of the "New Page" function as it will clear your paper and give you a fresh one, clearing all your earlier writing. Make sure to publish and save your writing if you want it!

Presently it changes the vertical spacing, so it's generally best to pick your font before you start typing.  It won't affect the text output, but if the spacing is much higher or lower, you may not be able to read what you're typing.  To pick a new font, just select it from the dropdown like so.

As usual, happy typing and if you find some novel use for something like this, feel free to reach out!  I have clever plans to possibly use this as an optional front-end for using my contact form, but as usual, wishes and fishes and time and all that.
